8 Creative Ways To Celebrate Thanksgiving With Your Family

Thanksgiving is a time to step away from the hectic hustle and bustle of normal life and instead focus all of your attention on your friends and family. The Thanksgiving feast is typically the central focus of this holiday's events, but it is certainly not the only way you can celebrate with your family. The team at Phillips, McElyea, Carpenter, & Welch, P.C. is here to help you expand your family's Thanksgiving traditions with these fun, creative celebration ideas.

1. Make An "I'm Thankful For..." Board
The main purpose of Thanksgiving is to express gratitude for the blessings in your life. One fun family tradition is to designate a space for the people at your Thanksgiving gathering to write down the things they are thankful for. Write "I'm Thankful For..." at the top of a dry erase board or large sheet of poster board, and supply your guests with markers to fill in the rest.

2. Volunteer Your Time
Many churches and non-profit organizations host Thanksgiving feasts for their members and/or less fortunate people within the community. Teach your children the value of giving by making a family tradition of volunteering to assist with these types of events. You can make great memories and instill important values in your children at the same time.

3. Play Games
Getting to spend quality time with your family is one of the best things about the holidays. When everyone is feeling tired and lazy after your gigantic feast, break out the board or card games. It's a perfect way to spend quality time with the people you love.

4. Get Outside
While a nice, relaxing activity may certainly sound tempting, getting outside and breathing in some fresh air (and burning some calories after your big meal!) may also be a good idea. Go for a hike, play frisbee or touch football in the backyard, or fly a kite. The possibilities are endless.

5. Do A Thanksgiving Craft
If you have young children, crafts are an excellent way to help them stretch their imaginations and exercise their creative instincts. There are countless Thanksgiving craft ideas you can choose from - make little pilgrims or turkeys out of paper plates, build decorative Thanksgiving-colored chains from construction paper, paint turkeys with finger paint and hand prints, etc.

6. Write Thank You Notes
Thanksgiving is all about giving thanks - what better way to celebrate than by directly thanking those in your life who have given you something or have done something for you this year? People love to receive handwritten thank you notes. Identify some of the best gifts/services you've received this year, and take a few moments to tell the person responsible how much you appreciate them.

7. Decorate For Christmas
Once Thanksgiving is over, it's full speed ahead towards Christmas. Setting aside the weekend after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas is a great way to keep the holiday celebrations going, and can become a fun annual tradition for the whole family.

8. Go Black Friday Shopping
Black Friday is the biggest retail event of the entire year. Getting up super early / staying up extra late to take advantage of the sales can be a fun way to make memories with your family (and save money on your Christmas shopping). Take care not to let things get out of hand, however; if you do decide to go Black Friday shopping, don't let the chase for a good deal outweigh common sense safety requirements.
