Memorial Day Weekend at the Lake of the Ozarks!

Memorial Day Weekend at the Lake - Fireworks, Boating, and taking time with your Family!

The Attorneys and staff at Phillips, McEylea, Carpenter & Welch, P.C. want to wish everyone a fantastic and restful Memorial Day weekend.  We are blessed to live in such a great community with a wide range of wonderful recreation activities available at the beautiful Lake of the Ozarks.  To get us ready for the holiday weekend, here is a little history of Memorial Day and a partial list of activities that are going on.

General Logan

Memorial Day History

Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5th, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic to remember the ultimate sacrifices of both Union and Confederate soldiers during the Civil War.  For the first Memorial day, flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.  Memorial Day is now recognized on the last Monday of May and is celebrated in many different ways across the county.  Since the late 1950's, soldiers have placed small American flags on the 260,000+ graves at Arlington National Cemetery, and in a Missouri twist, the Boy Scouts/Cub Scouts of St. Louis began placing flags on the 150,000 graves at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

Most Americans celebrate the holiday as the start of the summer season and typically spend the weekend enjoying family and doing typical summer activities like barbecuing, spending time outdoors, enjoying other recreational activities and watching fireworks.
