You know you're supposed to wear green, but what else do you know about St. Patrick's Day?
Saint Patrick
Saint Patrick, also known as the "Apostle of Ireland" or the "Patron Saint of Ireland," is credited with bringing the Christian faith to the people of Ireland. Little is known about Patrick's early life, but most historians agree that he was born somewhere towards the end of the 4th century AD, probably in Britain.
In his early adulthood, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland, where he was sold into slavery and imprisoned. He remained there for about six years, and it is during this time that he is said to have undergone a religious transformation. He eventually escaped, but later returned to Ireland as a missionary to teach the ways of the Christian faith to the Irish people.
Saint Patrick's Day
St. Patrick's Day is celebrated every year on March 17th, which marks the anniversary of Patrick's death. St. Patrick's Day was first celebrated in America in 1737, when some of the original colonists organized a religious service and a feast to honor their Irish heritage and culture.
The celebrations grew from there. New York held the first St. Patrick's Day parade in 1762. Chicago began dying the river green on St. Patrick's Day in 1962. Today, festivals, parades, and feasts take place all across the United States to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
