7 BIG Distractions Drivers Face

1. Eating While Driving
How many times have you looked over and you see someone chomping on a hamburger while driving down Highway 54? It happens. In today's busy world, people are multitasking and eating breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner on the road. However, eating while driving remains a top distraction for drivers and it can only take a few seconds for tragedy to strike and an accident to occur.

2. Texting While Driving
According to the National Safety Council, via Edgar Synder, using a cell phone while driving leads to 1.6 million crashes per year. These numbers don't lie and this distraction is serious. When you are coming down I-70 and start to see another vehicle drift toward your lane because they aren't paying attention and are looking down at their phones, it is extremely troubling.

3. Grooming While Driving
This goes back to being on the go so much. Some drivers choose to brush their hair, apply makeup, etc. while they are behind the wheel.

4. Drinking While Driving
Memorial Day weekend is approaching quickly. This weekend is when the Lake area really gets busy and law enforcement officers are ready. There is no excuse for drinking while driving, always designate a sober driver.

5. Reading While Driving
Reading your book, newspaper, an article on your phone, etc. - all of this can wait until you are no longer behind the wheel.

6. Smoking While Driving
Smoking can absolutely wait until you are no longer behind the wheel. If a cigarette but drops and you lean down to pick it up while driving you could seriously cause an accident.

7. Checking Back Seat While Driving
Whether you have small children in the back seat or are trying to reach something, it is important that you remain looking forward until you can pull over. Glance at your rearview mirror slightly if needed but pull over if you need to physically turn around and attend to your child or get something out of the back seat.
