5 Reasons You May Be Disqualified for Social Security Disability Benefits

Social Security Disability is a government system that provides monetary assistance to people with inadequate or no income and is disabled. The possibility may never even cross your mind when applying for social security disability, that you may NOT qualify. Prepare yourself because not being granted social security disability benefits is a REAL possibility. Phillips, McElyea, Carpenter and Welch are here to explain 5 reasons why you may not qualify for social security disability benefits.

5 Reasons You May Be Disqualified for Social Security Disability Benefits

1. You may make too much of an income.

You may be denied social security disability benefits if you make over the set limit of income. If you earn over this limit, it considered “substantial gainful activity (SGA).” This refers to the fact that you earn too much money to qualify. You are able to earn a certain amount when applying for Social Security disability, but not over the SGA limit, which changes every year. This year the SGA limit is $1170 per month.

2. Your disability won't last long enough or it isn't severe enough.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) must have reason to believe that your disability is severe enough to last 12 months or result in death, in order to qualify for Social Security benefits. An exception to this rule is if the Social Security applicant is blind.

3. The Social Security Administration has been unable to communicate with you.

In order to qualify for Social Security benefits, the Social Security Administration must be able to communicate with you. If the SSA is unable to reach you to schedule examinations or to speak about critical matters, you may be denied Social Security benefits.

4. You refuse to cooperate throughout the process.

Throughout the application process, you may be asked to turn over your medical records. If you refuse to do so, you may be denied Social Security Disability benefits.

5. Your disability is addiction or alcohol based.

Your Social Security Disability benefits may be denied if the Social Security Administration finds that your disability was caused by a drug addiction or alcoholism. The key factor to consider when a decision like this is being determined is whether or not you would still be disabled if you were no longer drinking alcohol or using drugs.
