5 Questions For Your Potential Real Estate Attorney

Buying, selling, or building a home is a wonderfully exciting time in anyone's life, but it certainly comes with its fair share of legal issues! Having an experience real estate lawyer on your side to help you handle boundary line disputes, access and easement issues, concerns over construction, and other issues can make a huge difference.

As the client, it is important to find a lawyer you trust. Before hiring real estate attorneys, set up interview times to get to know them. Asking them the following questions will help you get a better understanding of how they conduct their real estate law practices and, consequently, will better equip you in your hiring process.

1. How long have you been practicing real estate law?
Working with a less-experienced lawyer might not be a hindrance in other areas, but real estate law can be incredibly complex. You will be much better off working with an experienced real estate attorney.

2. Have you handled cases similar to mine before?
Real estate law comes in many different forms. Simply because an attorney has five or ten years of experience does not guarantee he or she will have handled a case like yours in the past.

3. How involved will I be in my case?
Some people like to be closely involved with their legal case; they want their lawyers to keep them in the loop every step of the way. Others would rather be more hands-off and only informed of the major milestones along the way. Whatever your desired method may be, it is important to find a lawyer who will meet you on your level.

4. Who else will be working on my case?
Your chosen lawyer will most likely not be the only one handling your case. Paralegals and office assistants will probably also be involved. If your case is sensitive, you may want to ask to meet the others who will be working on your case. You are hiring the whole team, so it's important that you feel comfortable with everyone.

5. How will you charge me?
It is important to address your finances in an upfront, forthright fashion. Hiring a lawyer is a big financial commitment, so it is completely fair to ask how your potential attorneys plan to handle the billing process.
