Preparing For Law School: Suggested Undergraduate Courses

Earning a solid undergraduate education is a crucial stepping stone on the path towards cultivating a successful career as a lawyer. Becoming a lawyer requires years of education and schooling even after you have completed your undergraduate degree, but your first four years of college will provide you with the foundation you need.

At Phillips, McElyea, Carpenter, & Welch, P.C., we believe in developing and encouraging the next generation of lawyers. If you or someone you know is currently pursuing their undergraduate degree with hopes of continuing on to law school after graduation, consider taking (or encouraging them to take) classes in the following subject areas.

Critical Thinking/Logic
Classes that encourage students to critically analyze and evaluate situations look wonderful on a transcript. Law schools are searching for students who can carefully, critically, and strategically pick apart situations and arguments so they can determine the truth or main point of the issue.

English/Grammar
Quality grammatical skills are a crucial part of anyone's education, but especially those of pre-law students. Law school applicants must be able to demonstrate a strong grasp of the English language and an ability to clearly and effectively communicate their thoughts in writing.

Public Speaking/Theatre
In trial situations, lawyers must be comfortable speaking in front of others and addressing a crowd. Taking classes like these will help pre-law students overcome any stage fright and/or performance anxiety they may have.

History/Economics
In order to have a clear vision for the future, one must first have a solid understanding of the past. These classes will provide students with a strong grasp of our economic system as well as a clear understanding of our nation's history.

Politics/Government
Obviously, lawyers are intricately connected to our legal system and must clearly understand the rules and regulations that govern it. These classes will give law school applicants a head start on the process.

It is important to keep in mind that law schools do not require any specific classes for acceptance. Lawyers come from all manner of undergraduate degrees, from English to theatre to engineering. No matter the discipline, performing well in challenging courses will help you on your way to becoming an experienced and trusted lawyer. Good luck!
